PDP crisis: Stubborn Sheriff won’t agree to out of court settlement

Despite efforts by leaders of the Peoples Democratic party, PDP, to find a lasting solution to the leadership crisis rocking the party, its factional chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has stuck to his guns, insisting on pursuing the cases in court. Sheriff, who said he has not reached any agreement with the caretaker committee headed by Senator Ahmed Makarfi, spoke through his faction’s Deputy Chairman, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh on Saturday.
According to Sheriff, his faction his faction was still pursuing its cases in court, adding that he would address the nation on the state of the party, on Monday.
“I have the express permission of Sheriff to inform our teeming supporters and PDP faithful nationwide that he has not reached agreement with anybody, neither has he permitted anybody to conclude on any processes on his behalf.
“We are continuing with our cases in court, we respect the rule of law. Sheriff will address a press conference on Monday on the state of our party, PDP. Our goal remains to return the party to the people and stamp out impunity.”

As part of efforts to put the crisis to an end, some leaders of the party had met with Sheriff a few days earlier.
Those at the meeting included Makarfi, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko.
It would also be recalled that the caretaker committee has fixed the national convention of the party for August 17 in Port Harcourt while also saying that it has zoned the position of national chairman to the southern part of the country.
PDP leaders, who attended the expanded national caucus meeting of the party held in AbujaThursday, where the decisions were announced, said the presence of Senator Buruji Kashamu, a known strong member of the Sheriff’s faction, is an indication that its reconciliatory efforts are working.
